Here’s what to expect on Riky Rick’s Stay Shining EP dropping this Friday

Riky Rick dropped a bomb shell on us all when he announced that he is ready to retire after his upcoming album in 2018. But to soothe our shock he accompanied that by announcing an EP release. We had a quick chat with him to get an insight into his new material.

According to the Cotton Eater, this EP is a token of appreciation to his fans and everyone else who have been supporting him throughout the years.

Although this drop seems timely, considering that it’s almost the festive season, Riky says it wasn’t planned this way, that ‘it could have been dropped anytime but now felt like a right time.’

‘I’m at a point in my life where I’m transitioning, I’m reflecting and now felt like the right time.’

The surprise EP titled Stay Shining, consists of 8 tracks including a minute long intro titled ‘Jordan’s Intro’ and ‘Joy’, an opening track which talks about him missing his past life, where everything was simple and carefree.

His latest single ‘Stay Shining’, third on the album, is a true summer track. Ali Keys and industry rising stars Major League DJs produced the beat, with a mini sample on Crystal Waters’ 1991 classic jam – ‘Gypsy Woman’. The single features Kwaito legend Professor, who really brings out that Kwaito flavour and Riky’s regular collaborator and friend, Cassper Nyovest.

The track is nostalgic and takes everything back to the basics, reminding us of a time when Kwaito was a big deal in Mzansi. Boss Zonke seamlessly switches between English and isiZulu, while rapping and singing, and informing us why he got into the industry in the first place.

‘For me music is most fun when I just create it without any expectations. ‘Stay Shining’ was just me going back to the old me, in the beginning when I started. Back then Kwaito was the biggest influence in my sound because of its authenticity.’

‘Buy It Out’, which came out before ‘Stay Shining,’ is a two-minute track with an infusion of up-tempo beat and trap sound. In it he brags about his cotton eating ways and his friends wilding out ways.

The remix version of ‘Buy It Out’ is an eight-minute track featuring 2Fresh, Stilo Magolide, KLYMAX, Frank Casino, J Molley, YoungstaCPT and rap god, Da Les. This version is diverse, YoungCPT coming in with his Kaap-rap-style, Stilo with his gqom influenced-rap style and Frank Casino with his trap sound — it is the kind of song guaranteed to stay on your mind and have you rap along.

Tshego made the beat for ‘Vapors’ and Nasty C was pulled in. This track recounts the hardships of living life as a successful artist, and contrary to popular belief, that it is all roses and fun, it actually puts pressure for artists to create a certain type of music — which in most cases take the fun away.

Davido chose the beat for ‘Murdah’ which is an Afro-beat sound most recognisable in West African songs, similar to his hit single ‘If’. Gemini Major produced the track and Riky’s flows in this beat are refreshing and differ a little to what we’re used to.

‘Pick You Up’ features A_Reece and the 20 year-old is a hustler with mad love for music. In this collaboration, he drops a sick verse and Riky agreed in one tweet.

Riky Rick is clearly fond of the young lad’s talent and bringing him in is only testament to that.

Stay Shining is an interesting EP to come from the award-winning rapper thus far, and we’ll leave it to you to decide which is your favourite track. You’ll know when the album drops on Friday, 3 November.
