If you, for some reason, feared that Star Wars would come to an end in two years when Episode IX premieres two years from now, it’s time to officially put that idea to rest—there’s going to be more Star Wars.
This isn’t terribly surprising—Star Wars being worth more money than, well, money—but what is a bit of a surprise is who will be making it: Porg MovieThe Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.
Johnson, according to Disney and Lucasfilm, will be shepherding a new trilogy ‘separate from the episodic Skywalker saga,’ which means he’ll be presumably working with a blank slate, making Star Wars movies completely removed from the familiar set of characters and ideas we’ll have seen for nine movies by the time the trilogy of Skywalker-focused trilogies wrap up in 2019.
Which means it’ll be some time before we see the first film in this new trilogy, which Johnson will write and direct.
The statement released by Lucasfilm doesn’t say if he’ll do that for all three films—but that’s very far in the future, and hopefully, it’s a future that has Johnson shaking things up by pushing for his Star Wars sequels to be directed by someone who isn’t a white guy.
In the short term, you can probably surmise that everyone who has seen The Last Jedi thinks that it is extremely good.
Of course, the only people who have seen it so far are people who are very much invested in it, but so far, things are looking up for this movie.
As for the future? Well, there’s always gonna be a new Star Wars movie, forever and always, until there isn’t.
