Exclusive: Q & A with Being Bonang breakout star Pinky Girl

We simply couldn’t get enough of the breakout reality star Tebogo Pinky Girl Mekgwe in season 1 of Being Bonang. So when we found out that our favourite ‘mo-gal’ will be back for season 2, we just had to reach out to her for an exclusive interview.

Pinky Girl Being Bonang Season 2

GLAMOUR: In Season 1, we saw you go from Bonang’s cousin to Bonang’s Executive Assistant and reality star. How has fame or being on TV changed your life?

Pinky Girl: I definitely get more recognition now, and people are more aware of who I am. I am not a celebrity, as yet, but it’s something that I’m working on. Being on TV has really opened new opportunities up for me, and I’ve been introduced to so many new great people, and have garnered attention from people in the industry who can definitely be of great value to me.

G: Your hair and makeup are always on fleek! Do you have any beauty tips for our GLAMOUR girls?

PG: A girl can never be caught slippin’! I grew up with girls, especially Bonang, so we would always play around with makeup and clothes. I still do that to this day. I will switch up my hair from a blonde wig to a pink wig. I think it’s very important to explore and have fun with your looks. I read up on trends and I adapt them to what suits me and my personality the best. I think that would be my biggest beauty tip. Just have fun with it and you will find what best works for you.

G: What has your ‘cuzzie’ taught you about slaying and the entertainment industry?

PG: She has taught me so many things, but the one thing that has stood out for me out of everything, is how to build up your profile and brand. She has managed to build and sustain an incredible profile and brand for herself; that is something I admire very much. She has also taught me that authenticity is your BFF. Being authentic is the best thing one could ever do for themselves. It makes everything else that much easier.

G: What’s in your handbag right now?

PG: Make-up LOL! A lot of make-up, and beauty products. I always keep lipstick and lip gloss in my bag, because a girl can never be caught with dry chapped lips. My bag always has to have make-up in it for touch-ups throughout the day. Also, some good hand cream and a good fragrance. These are really my staple handbag items. And a good pair of sunglasses!

G: What music are you listening to at the moment?

PG: I listen to a lot of House and Soul and a bit of Cardi B.

G: What can we expect from Pinky Girl this season?

PG: I will be taking viewers on my journey to finding my feet in this industry that I am so absolutely new to. I will be enlisting the help of some really amazing individuals and professionals who will assist me on this journey, and help me package my brand. You can also expect to see me working on some exciting projects that are in the pipeline. It’s going to be an amazing season. If you loved Season 1, this one will definitely be for the books.

G: Champagne or wine?

PG: Champagne! That’s my thing.

G: Where did you grow up? Have you and Bonang always been this close?

PG: Bonang and I are only a year apart, so we grew up together. I am an only child so growing up with her was like growing up with a sister; almost like a twin. We would always share clothes and we went everywhere together. Her father would always come get us from Pretoria, where I was based, and Joburg where she was based and take us to Mahikeng where we would spend our holidays together. We literally grew up with each other so yeah, we have always been this close.

G: What does a day in the life of Pinky Girl look like?

PG: Meetings. Meetings. Meetings. I am hard at work building my “Pinky Girl” brand and trying to get that off the ground. So, I’m always out on daily meetings with new and different industry people, and working on some pretty cool stuff.

G: Will we get to see more of your personal life in the new season?

PG: This year is all about securing the bag! I have just recently turned 30 and I really want to focus all my time and energy on myself and my career. I want to focus on building something concrete and sustainable out of the opportunities that being on the show has afforded me, and turn them into a credible career path.

Being Bonang season 2 airs tonight, Friday 4 May, on 1Magic.

“Stranger Things” Star Caleb McLaughlin Talks Self-Love and Confidence

Caleb McLaughlin Strangers Things

When Caleb McLaughlin wakes up in the morning, he stares straight into the mirror and says, “hey, good looking.” OK, maybe the Stranger Things star was joking about that, but Caleb is all about self-love, so much so that he started a couple hashtags to spread that attitude.

With #EmbraceYourFace and #BeYourBiggestFan, which he started a little over a year ago, Caleb not only talks about his own self-confidence and love, but he’s given fans an opportunity to share their own stories. His Stranger Things cast mates have even joined in on the movement. The hashtags, Caleb told Teen Vogue, are about loving yourself right where you’re at, but that isn’t always easy. Everyone has their own insecurities that may prevent them from greeting themselves with a “hey, good-looking” in the morning.

That’s precisely why we caught up with Caleb to see why he started these hashtags, and how he copes with moments of self-doubt. He also opened up about how he learned to embrace his own face, and how he works on keeping up his self-confidence.

Teen Vogue: How did you come up with #EmbraceYourFace and #BeYourBiggestFan?

Caleb McLaughlin: My parents always told me to be my biggest fan since I was young. When no one else is your fan, you have to be your own cheerleader. I wanted to show people they have to love themselves and embrace that. I wanted to let them know I’m here for them and spread the love. I’ve always had #BeYourBiggestFan. As far as #EmbraceYourFace, I had a really bad acne day … and my mom and I were going to a supermarket. I had pimple cream all over my face. [I went in like that because] it’s fine, I’m a teen, it’s the process. Everyone goes through these things. People are really insecure about how people think about how they look, so I went on [Instagram] Live and I said, ‘guys, embrace your face.’ Not everyone is the same, not everyone’s perfect. Embrace who you are because there’s no one else like you in the world.

#TB to ST2 😂 fun times #BeYourBiggestFan #EmbraceYourFace

A post shared by Caleb McLaughlin (@therealcalebmclaughlin) on

TV: How do you practice self-love and embrace your face?

CM: I just tell myself, ‘hey, good looking, have a great day!’ I don’t know, I just try to stay confident in myself — not in a cocky way but in a humble way. Just love people. When you spread love, you feel good about yourself.

TV: Have you ever struggled with feeling good about yourself?

CM: Many times. I wouldn’t have these hashtags if I never didn’t feel confident. It wasn’t to the point where I had major issues, just a little stuff. If I didn’t have any problems with myself I don’t think I would have this hashtag.

TV: Do you have any times for others who might be struggling with confidence?

CM: Definitely. It’s easy to say ‘be your biggest fan,’ but you have to really tell [people] ‘love yourself.’ There’s something you can do that no one else can do, and embrace that. I’d tell them I love them and keep going and spread the love. One person at a time.

#Embraceyourface#BeyourBiggestFan ❤️

TV: Have any stories or posts from fans using your hashtag stuck out to you?

CM: This lady stood up and told me once I started it that before I started #EmbraceYourFace, she said she [was having suicidal ideation]. Once she saw my Instagram post, she said she didn’t want to do it anymore because she said, ‘Caleb is his biggest fan, I’m gonna be mine.’ She got pretty teary, I was pretty emotional.

TV: How do you and the cast of Stranger Things practice being each others’ biggest fans and encourage self-love?

CM: After every take, we’re like, ‘good job guys, let’s go eat.’ We have fun.

This interview has been edited lightly for length and clarity.

See inside the island resort where Kylie Jenner and Stormi are staying

Kylie JennerJust a few days after celebrating boyfriend Travis Scott’s 26th birthday by renting out an entire amusement park, Kylie Jenner appears to be keeping the festivities going by jetting off with Travis and their 3-month-old daughter, Stormi Webster, to Turks and Caicos for an island getaway. Since Tuesday, the Kylie Cosmetics founder has posted on Instagram a steady stream of envy-inducing photos from her family’s tropical vacay. Per the pics, the trio has been sunning on yachts, taking walks on the beach, and napping in their cushy resort. “Morning in paradise,” Kylie captioned one shot of her sitting on a lounge chair on the beach.

According to People, the Jenner-Websters are reportedly currently hiding out at the luxe Amanyara resort on the Providenciales island of Turks and Caicos. Per the resort’s website, Amanyara boasts a private, 800-meter white-sand beach, a nearby barrier reef for snorkelling, multiple restaurants, and several wellness and spa “pavilions.” Available rooms range from suites with ocean views and private pools to completely private, multi-bedroom villas; rooms start at around $1,800 per night.

Kylie is already a fan of Turks and Caicos — she rented out a private compound worth a whopping $50 million in 2016 to celebrate her 19th birthday with her friends and family on the island nation. And it seems the Turks and Caicos love run in the Kardashian-Jenner family: As People notes, Kylie’s sisters Kourtney and Kim Kardashian were in Turks and Caicos just last month, when they also reportedly stayed at the Amanyara resort.

This black Barbie doll’s cornrows are sparking controversy on social media

There’s no arguing that Barbies have improved when it comes to inclusivity, as we’re no longer only seeing the same straight-sized, blonde, white dolls that were first introduced in the late 1950s. Now, we have Barbies that are representative of different shapes, sizes, and skin tones, which is certainly a step in the right direction. However, Mattel just released its latest rendition of the iconic toy — and a lot of people are not happy with it. The reason? The black doll’s hairstyle.

Posted to Barbie’s style Instagram, the doll in question is shown wearing a half head of black cornrows and a blonde curly weave next to two white dolls wearing their hair in ponytails. “Movie night with my girls to watch the @Hulu premiere of the new @Barbie documentary,” reads the caption.

People were very quick to comment on the photo with their feelings, most of which expressed deep frustration over the doll’s hair. “Who’s bright idea was it to style the AA Barbie’s hair like that. All of these beautiful brown women in all industries, you couldn’t find ONE to look to for hair inspiration? You need to remove her and start from scratch IMMEDIATELY!!” wrote one user. “Maybe some have worn this style but it doesn’t represent the majority,” and “the Black Barbie hairstyle is horrid,” are just a few of countless comments that derided the look.

Others didn’t seem to take issue with Black Barbie’s look. “There are other black dolls on this same page with different hairstyles that represent how folks choose to wear their hair,” one commenter said. “The hypersensitivity and the ‘ready to pop off’ is on display.”
Another user echoed the sentiment, noting that the black Barbie dolls on the Instagram page had a wide range of hairstyles representative of how some black women choose to wear their hair. “@barbiestyle [has] dolls to fit all different types of women. You act as if you have never seen a black woman wear their hair braided on the side with curls or weave on the other side. They didn’t just pull this hairstyle out the sky this is a hairstyle that some black women wear.” Though the user did note that she wasn’t particularly a fan of the color of the hair.

Still, the general consensus was negative, so time will tell if Mattel takes that into consideration in the future.
