6 Singers you didn’t know could speak Spanish

SpanishThe chart-toppers in music as of late has been riddled with Spanish influence and with that hidden talents have come out of the works – like singers you had no idea could speak Spanish, spitting a whole verse like it was their mother tongue. Now whether they can actually speak the language of passion or not it another question. Whether they’re up for nights rehearsing their lines like a start-out actor or maybe they’ve hired the best spSpanisheacher in town, we’ll never know. From Drake crooning on a bachata beat to Beyoncé’s bilingual bangers, here are some artists you likely didn’t know sang on Spanish records.

Drake

Romeo Santos is one of Latin music’s biggest forces and throughout his career has stuck to singing strictly in Spanish. Despite having tons of a crossover appeal and reigning from The Bronx, the dude knows where his strengths lie which is why he got Drake to step into his world and croon in Spanish for 2014’s “Odio.”

Pharell

Pharrell gave J Balvin and the reggaeton scene a major co-sign by co-producing and featuring on the slinky ‘Safari’ track, handling the Spanish hook.

Fifth Harmony

While Harmonizers know Fifth Harmony—who currently boast two Hispanic members with the departed Camilla Cabello also being Latina—have recorded some of their English songs in Spanish, but they made a clear move to the Latin-pop mainstream when they jumped on a track with the Spanish King himself, Pitbull on his track for ‘Por Favor.’

Justin Bieber

Now that the song was a Top 5 hit worldwide for weeks, you probably do know that Justin Bieber sang in Spanish for the remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s mega-hit ‘Despacito.’ We have to admit that Bieber sounds gooood en Español.

Beyoncé

During her B’Day and I Am…Sasha Fierce eras, Beyoncé was very into recording bilingual versions of her tracks. But her most recent venture was when she jumped onto J Balvin’s ‘Mi Gente’ and if the song wasn’t popular enough when it first dropped you can only imagine how quickly it blew up when Beyoncé decided to jump on board.

Cardi B

THIS IS NOT A DRILL. Trust us we were just as surprised when we came across Miss Bodak Yellow shaking those ever so desirable hips to a sexy Spanish song with Ozuno. Is there anything Cardi B can’t do??

Little Mix

Little Mix‘s sultry new song with CNCO, “Reggaetón Lento (Remix),” is garnering hundreds of thousands of views on Youtube, and for good reason. In an interview, the girls expressed how much they loved learning the Spanish verses and words. “It was just so much fun singing in Spanish,” they said. “We love learning other languages.”

If his More Life playlist is anything to go by, fans will be in for a treat with his new track. The compilation of songs broke streaming records on both Apple Music and Spotify.

Within the first 24 hours of being released the project, garnered a whopping 89.9 million streams globally on Apple Music, handing him a new world record for streams in a 24-hour period. On Spotify, the first full day of release for More Life saw it rake in the best first-day streams for any album on the service.

The record gained was 61.3 million global streams, smashing the previous record of 56.7 million, held by Ed Sheeran’s recently released Divide. If that wasn’t enough, the ‘Passionfruit’ hitmaker also beat Ed’s previously held record of the most streamed artist in a single day on Spotify.

Our favourite moments from the Billboard Music Awards

This year’s BBMAs, held at the T-Mobile Arena on 21 May in Las Vegas, were a smash hit, with classic stars like Cher and Celine Dion joining the lineup with the likes of Drake, Lorde, Miley Cyrus and more. Here’s a round-up of our favourite moments from this year’s show:

1 Celine Dion dressed as a swan/soft serve ice cream

Celine Dion sang ‘My heart will go on’, which was a bit of a cheap shot. She knows we can’t resist Jack and Rose (there was room on that door). Nevertheless, it was an emotional powerhouse of a performance that tugged at the heartstrings of BBMA watchers across the globe, and made us all ready to re-watch Titanic twenty years after its initial release.

2 Nicki Minaj’s nine-minute montage opens the BBMAs

Nine minutes of Nicki? Nine? Although it may have seemed like too much, the crowd loved it. Or perhaps they were just transfixed by her butt (and her backup dancers). With dozens of dancers to support her, as well as Lil Wayne, David Guetta and Jason Derulo, there was no way it wasn’t going to be a hit.

3 Drake won the BBMAs. He won the whole thing.

Drake performed ‘Gyalchester’ and wowed crowds by performing in the middle of exploding fire and water and doing his thang inside the famous Bellagio fountain. (Yes, an actual fountain.)

Hear hear.

cher

4 Cher, full stop.

At 71 years old, Cher won the well-deserved Icon Award. She performed ‘Believe’ and ‘If I could turn back time’, the two biggest hits of her career. She gave a humorous and charismatic speech and proved to all those watching the BBMAs that true style is timeless.

mileyScreen Shot 2017-05-22 at 4.17.02 PMScreen Shot 2017-05-22 at 4.17.31 PM

5 Miley reinvented herself. Again.

Gone are the days of Miley riding a wrecking ball naked and grinding worlds-perviest-man Robin Thicke. Once again, Hannah Montana donned a new disguise, bringing squeaky-clean Miley Cyrus back from hiatus. She sang her new single, ‘Malibu’ after her sister Noah introduced her with the line, “for the first time in years with pants on, my big sister Miley Cyrus!” (*groan*). Nevertheless, it’s great to have her back.

halsey

6 What was up with Halsey’s bra?

It’s like the photos you look at with regret after your Matric farewell, when you decided to strip and forgot that you were wearing a badly-fitting beige Woolies granny bra. Not the best outfit at the BBMAs by far.

lorde

7 Lorde sang Karaoke

Isn’t the whole point of karaoke that you’re really bad at singing, and it’s funny for the audience? Lorde didn’t seem to care and performed ‘Green light’ to the wild approval of fans.

8 Zayn doesn’t pitch

“Can’t make it to the #BBMAs tonight and know I’ve been away for a bit,” he wrote. “Finishing up these new songs for you. Be back soon.”

You call that an excuse? Please.

9 Twitter destroys the Chainsmokers

When ‘Closer’ comes on in the club, you go so wild your own mother would disown you. Despite this, the duo have a reputation for giving terrible performances and last night’s BBMAs were no exception. Better luck next time, I guess? They performed a song entitled ‘It’s hard when you’re young’. The entire world knows that, though, because it seems like that’s the only lyric.

10 Camilla Cabello, ex-Fifth Harmony singer, performs ‘Crying in the Club’

While she performed to general acclaim, Twitter followers were not as happy.

12 Vanessa Hudgens hosts the BBMAs

In the words of GLAMOUR’s art director, “I thought we left her in 2007?”. Apparently, Vanessa Hudgens is not dead or retired, but is readying for a comeback. She proved herself last night by being ready for anything that came her way, including a bit of rapping and some wild dancing when Cher took the stage. She even managed to impersonate every single artist. Hats off to her!

Drake made history at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards on Sunday (21May17) by taking home a record-breaking 13 prizes at the Las Vegas ceremony.

The Hotline Bling hitmaker headed into the weekend tied with The Chainsmokers with 22 nominations each, and already had 10 under his belt by the time he hit the red carpet for Sunday night’s (21May17) event. Among his early wins were accolades for Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Album for Views.

He quickly added prizes for Top Male Artist and Top Billboard 200 Album for Views, tying Adele for the most Billboard Music Awards in a single year with 12, but Drake went one up after going head-to-head in the final category of the night, for Top Artist.

However, as he stepped up to the stage, the MC acknowledged the British soul star would likely take back the most wins title when she releases her next album.

Putting on a Jamaican accent, Drake said, “Hold tight Adele, because when the new ting drops, yeah, ya fall right back to get the record back (sic)!”

Pregnant Beyonce, who did not attend the Las Vegas event, scored five awards, while The Chainsmokers and Twenty One Pilots ended up with four apiece.

Drake also had arguably the most visually-stunning performance of the night after delivering his Gyalchester tune from a stage in the middle of the famed Fountains of Bellagio outside the Bellagio hotel and resort. Drake rapped the track as fireworks exploded all around him.

There were also top sets from Nicki Minaj, Camila Cabello, Miley Cyrus, Icon Award winner Cher, and Celine Dion, who celebrated the 20th anniversary of her classic ballad My Heart Will Go On, the theme song to 1997 movie Titanic, by delivering a pitch-perfect rendition which earned her a standing ovation from the celebrity-filled crowd.

Meanwhile, Imagine Dragons star Dan Reynolds paid tribute to Chris Cornell, remembering the tragic rocker as “a true innovator, a musical architect, and a pioneer on the cutting edge of the Seattle grunge movement”.

“Even though Chris is gone, his legacy endures,” Reynolds said, before leading a moment of silence.

The Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman committed suicide on Wednesday night (17May17), aged 52.

Nicki Minaj has played down rumours she is dating fellow rapper Nas after sharing a photo of the pair enjoying dinner at his new Los Angeles restaurant.

The Anaconda hitmaker, real name Onika Maraj, took to Instagram on Tuesday night (09May17) to post a snap of the two sitting side by side at Nas’ fried chicken eatery Sweet Chick.

“Only KINGS recognize QUEENS,” she captioned the image, in which they both pose with their eyes closed, while Nas appears to nuzzle Nicki’s hair as he wraps his arm around her shoulders. They also rocked the same diamond-studded chain.

“@sweetchicklife has the best food,” she added. “congrats @nas”.

The One Mic MC shared the same photo on his Twitter account, and wrote, “Straight Outta Queens!”, giving a shout out to their shared home city of Queens, New York.

Fans immediately began speculating about a possible romance after the cosy picture appeared online, and devotees even coined a new nickname for the rumoured couple, with “#NasNika” becoming a trending topic on Twitter.

However, Nicki, who split from rapper Meek Mill in December (16), seems to be brushing off the new gossip.

One fan grabbed the star’s attention after sending a screenshot of Wednesday’s (10May17) hot topics to Nicki: “Trending # (number) 4 now on the charts @NICKIMINAJ yessss (sic),” wrote the follower, prompting the 34-year-old to repost the image and respond, “y’all so d**n silly (sic)”.

Nas has yet to comment on the dating speculation. He became an investor in chef John Seymour’s Sweet Chick chain in 2015, and helped owners secure funding to expand outside of their two New York City locations. The Los Angeles branch launched last month (Apr17).
