Kanye West is giving his most radical performance yet

Whether by design or accident, there is something strange and new happening as John Legend, T.I., and others enter the conversation.

On Tuesday morning, Kanye West dropped footage of two conversations he’s had over the past month. The first, posted on his website is a short, edited video of the artist in his home, debating T.I. in what, ostensibly, was the conversation that led to the recording of “Ye vs. The People.” The second is an extended interview with Charlamagne Tha God, covering everything from mental health to politics, being forty, and more—a conversation in which the artist reflects on where he is now. In both, Kanye is quietly insightful and brashly ignorant, as wrongheaded as his critics have said and more lucid than he’s given credit for. Kanye West is at a crossroads, and so are we. But even as he sets his image on fire and burns his cred to the ground, Kanye West is doing something radical, unprecedented, and maybe even important.

When discussing Kanye West, it’s necessary to first acknowledge the truth of his celebrity. Kanye West is an artist who rose to fame thanks to escalating displays of provocation and gross narcissism coupled with consistently brilliant and commercially successful music. Kanye West has benefited from a culture of misogyny and succeeded despite never having to reckon with his attitudes towards women. Kanye West has, for years, been the benefactor of a cult of personality willing to overlook or redirect the blame for his every misstep and offense. (We’re as guilty as anyone.)

Since his return to Twitter, West has been flirting with conservative voices and ideas in a manner that comes across as definitively pro-Trump, inciting the ire of the public and sending his progressive peers running to try and course-correct their misguided friend.

Let’s put to bed the idea that Kanye means anything other than what he says. Whenever a celebrity of West’s stature expresses views that don’t line up with those of their fans, there’s always a tendency to suggest there’s some greater scheme at play. It’s the five-dimensional chess Trump supporters on Reddit invoke in favor of a more simple truth: That the man is an idiot. Similarly, it’s likely that Kanye’s publicly expressed views and privately held beliefs are, if not one and the same, then very closely aligned. Kanye West is not a man whose fame came from playing things close to the vest, and he is also a man who is clearly contemplating his vast power and influence and trying to achieve a form of enlightenment through which he can wield it. Unfortunately, as Damon Young writes at VSB, West is endorsing the sort of intellectualism of those who do not read.

“To [West], people like Trump or Candace Owens are free thinkers—mavericks unafraid to challenge the status quo,” writes Young. “But if he’d actually pick up a book (and not just any 48 Laws of Power-ass book, but the right books), he’d be aware of the danger of that type of contrarianism and aware that for people like Trump and Owens, their words aren’t about free thinking. They’re specifically and intentionally tethered to white resentment, which is also often tied to anti-intellectualism. They’re actually the antithesis of free thought. They don’t think. They incite. ”

There is a performative aspect to Kanye’s persona that’s also worth keeping in mind. West is and has always been a provocateur—despite his current good-vibes-and-open-dialog mindset, the man has never known how to wield his celebrity in any other way than carpet bombing the culture, expressing himself in as high-impact a manner as he can manage, because that’s the only way anyone’s ever listened to him, no matter how valid his arguments. Kanye is essentially doing what he always has done: court outrage to advance his career. That he has a new album on the horizon is no accident. Only this time, he’s doing it using his inside voice while stepping across the one line liberal America has drawn in the sand following the election of Trump.

“[West is] happy to play the foil as long as we react to him, whether it’s hate, love, loving the old Kanye, or finding him deeply problematic but mostly tolerable,” wrote our own Chris Gayomali last summer. “You can learn a lot about a person by how they feel about Kanye West.”

But Freethinking Kanye—whether by design or accident or hubris—is the conduit to something we’ve never really seen before, something radical that’s worth observing for what it is: We’re watching famous people of color publicly debate politics, advocate for themselves, and call each other out amongst themselves. He has forced his more progressive peers to articulate their politics explicitly in public forums, forcing them to draw lines around what’s acceptable and what’s not, to reject his galaxy-brain takes and call them out for the disingenuous bullshit that it is. He’s got John Legend on record texting and tweeting about the human cost of Trump’s policies. He has Janelle Monáe talking about how the narratives constructed by so-called freethinkers are used to justify oppression. And yes, T.I., of all people, at a loss for words in a video posted onto kanyewest.com, is saying that there’s “some shit you don’t align with, and some shit you don’t go against.” The staging and optics practically feel Kris Jenner-esque.

Kanye is an artist who taught a generation of marginalized people to find a wellspring of confidence long denied to them, to carry themselves as people with worthwhile things to say, to push against overwhelming cultural forces that would conspire to keep you benched in your own story. And now, in a stunning act of self-immolation, Kanye is teaching that same generation to rise up and speak against their idols, to leave them behind.

Kanye West explains Jay-Z feud

Kanye West fell out with Jay-Z after his mentor failed to attend his wedding.

The Stronger rapper admitted he was ‘hurt’ when his friend and wife Beyonce failed to join him in Italy in 2014 when he tied the knot with Kim Kardashian West – with whom he has children North, four, Saint, two, and three-month-old Chicago – because the couple are like ‘family’ to him.

Speaking to Charlamagne Tha God on iHeartRadio’s ‘The Breakfast Club’, he said: ‘I was hurt about them not coming to the wedding. I understand they were going through some things, but if it’s family, you’re not going to miss a wedding.

‘I’m not using this interview to put out any negative things, but I gotta state my truth. You just start coming up with all type of crazy things in your head, like ‘Why?’ ‘

The 40-year-old star insists he is ‘past’ feeling disappointed now, though he was upset at the time, and though the pair are back on speaking terms, Kanye has never directly asked Jay about the snub.

He said: ‘I don’t think I ever asked him that question, directly.’

The ‘Bound 2’ hitmaker also addressed Jay’s track ‘Kill Jay-Z’, from his 2017 album ‘4:44’, in which the Tidal founder slammed Kanye and claimed he ‘gave him 20 million’ when in return he was called out on stage by the rapper in a lengthy rant in 2016.

And Kanye claimed he was left ‘frustrated’ by the lyrics of the track because the money referenced was from a Live Nation touring deal.

He said: ‘That concept that he gave me the money that’s what frustrated me because actually the money he got it from Live Nation. It was a touring deal.

‘But the fact that it was worded that it came from him — I’m a very loyal, emotional artist, person, that made me feel like I owed more than the money itself. It put me in more of a controlled situation. I’m only acting out of love — I don’t need to be controlled, I just need to be inspired and informed.’

The former ‘Watch the Throne’ tourmates haven’t seen one another since their falling out but Kanye said they are ‘good now’.

He added: ‘We’re texting each other. It’s positive energy. I haven’t seen him, but I can feel him.’

Kim Kardashian’s literally sending gifts to her haters—including Taylor Swift

But back to the gift: Kim posted a list to Snapchat of all the “lovers” and “haters” she’s planning on sending her new fragrances to. She has three scents: BFF (which is pink), BAE (blue), and Ride or Die (purple), and everyone on her list was assigned a color.

The “Ride or Dies” are written on purple sticky notes, and they include Jennifer Lawrence, Chrissy Teigen, and Paris Hilton—the usual suspects. The “BFFs” are in pink and include Kourtney Kardashian and Kendall Jenner—again, typical.

But it’s the celebrities in blue—the “BAES,” a.k.a. her “haters”—that are noteworthy. Here’s whom she included: Sarah Michelle Geller, Janice Dickinson, Chloë Grace Moretz, Pink, Bette Midler, Chelsea Handler, Piers Morgan, Naya Rivera, Blac Chyna, Wendy Williams, Sharon Osbourne, and Taylor Alison Swift.

“I’m going to send them to my lovers, to my haters, [and] to everyone I think of, because it’s Valentine’s Day, after all,” Kim says in the Snapchat. Take a look at this hit list for yourself, below:

Kim Kardashian Snapchat

I’m confused. Was Kim not flattered by all the sweet things Swift said about her on Reputation? Does she not remember the time Handler said Keeping Up With the Kardashians gets “good ratings”? Why is she trying to give Piers Morgan more press?

Her motivation for this is unclear. Maybe Kim has a sudden appreciation for Hocus Pocus or is watching old episodes of Glee and feeling nostalgic. Maybe she wants a DVD of Chloë Grace Moretz’s incredible work in Big Momma’s House 2.Who the hell knows? Either way, it’s happening: Soon everyone who has picked a fight with the Kardashians—either imaginary, in the tabloids, or in real life—is about to receive a giant heart-shaped bottle with Kim’s name on it. Delicious.

Do you hear that? That’s the sound of T-Swift writing a new song called “Perfume.”

Kim Kardashian hits out at Lamar Odom after scathing comments about Khloé

There’s nothing quite like the bond between sisters; you mess with one of them, you’ve messed with all of them, and you’re about to be taken down.

Kim Kardashian West

The drama between Khloé Kardashian and Lamar Odom seemed like water under the bridge – but if last night’s drama is anything to go by, it seems that isn’t the case. You may remember a few years ago when Lamar was hospitalised and almost died after he was found unresponsive in a Nevada brothel.

While he recovered, Khloé put their divorce on hold to stand by his side, but it was inevitable that the pair would eventually split. It all seemed amicable between them, that is, until Lamar went to the press and spoke about his relationship with Khloé – and he wasn’t very nice about it.

“I understand when it’s over, it’s over,” Lamar said in a sneak peek video of an appearance on new US show BET’s Mancave. “When she was with her second or third NBA ball player, I can see that.”

Not willing to let her sister be spoken about like that, Kimmy K came to the rescue with this sassy response:

Oooh burn! Of course, Khloé liked it. Khloé herself has yet to say anything, but we bet there’s some ferocious group chatting going on right now.

Kim Kardashian didn’t invite her surrogate to her baby shower for an interesting reason

Kim Kardashian

Rumours floated around all summer that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West hired a surrogate to carry their third baby. The couple kept mum on the reports — no confirming or denying — until September 28, when a Keeping Up With the Kardashians promo answered the question for us. “We’re having a baby,” Kim told Khloé over FaceTime in the teaser.

Since then, Kim’s opened up more about her surrogate. No, we don’t know her identity (and probably never will), but Kim did reveal that having a surrogate is harder than both of her pregnancies combined. “Anyone that says or thinks it is just the easy way out is just completely wrong,” she said. “I think it is so much harder to go through it this way, because you are not really in control.”

And on The Real‘s Thursday (November 16) episode, we learned something else about Kim’s surrogate: Kim didn’t invite her to her baby shower last weekend. Don’t worry, though, because the reason isn’t shady. There’s no bad blood. In fact, Kim actually says she has the “best relationship” with her surrogate and that she’s the “perfect person” to do this for her family. It’s just that Kim hasn’t fully explained the situation to her children, North and Saint, and didn’t want things to be awkward.

“I did not [invite the surrogate],” she said on the show. “I did introduce her to my family. I introduced her to my family earlier that day. And, you know, I just thought, I don’t know, it was, like, a weird decision to have to make. Of course, I would’ve wanted her to be there and be a part of it, but I hadn’t really gone that far in explaining it to my kids yet. So I have to figure that out first before they really see and then if we’re celebrating, you know, her. I just want to celebrate the baby. I think I have to explain it to my kids first and figure out how I’m going to explain it to them.”

Watch her explain this for yourself, below:

Kim is receiving some flak on social media for this, but as The Real co-host Adrienne Bailon says in this video, she had to do what made her (and her surrogate) the most comfortable. There isn’t a roadmap for situations like this.

Sorry Kim, but one of your sisters is taking your crown for our fave Kardashian. Yep, Karla is stealing that limelight, and there’s nothing you can do about it.

We first met her last year, but now Ellen DeGeneres has brought back the secret Kardashian sister for her Halloween episode and it’s just brilliant.

The chat show host made jokes about the baby rumours (and confirmations) in the family: Kim is expecting her third via surrogateKhloé is expecting her first child with boyfriend Tristan Thompson and Kylie Jenner is reportedly expecting a boy with Travis Scott, though she hasn’t confirmed it yet.

‘Karla’ joked: “This season, all the Kardashians are having babies, or what we like to call them, spin-offs.

“We all know that Kim is expecting, and everyone is talking about Khloé and Kylie being pregnant, but I have breaking news. I’m not supposed to tell anybody, but I don’t care because I’m a part of the family. Kourtney is pregnant as well!”

As she says it, 38-year-old reality star Kourtney comes out to set the rumours straight: “Stop making up rumours about me! I’m not pregnant. Karla, stop trying to make up rumours like you know all of our secrets.”

Karla then replies: “Sorry, I confused you with Kendall [Jenner] ’cause Kendall’s pregnant. I know that for a fact,” at which stage Kendall comes out to also quash rumours.

From the big hair, to the huge boobs, leopard print and blinged-up nails, the talk show host makes an excellent new addition to the Kardashian Klan. Oh, and wait until you see the Kardashian-style bum she showed off last year.

Khloé Kardashian sort of confirmed her pregnancy at a Halloween party

After E! News confirmed Khloé Kardashian was pregnant with her first baby, we were still waiting for Khloé to break the news herself – and last night at a Halloween party she might just have done it.

The reality star was giving fans a peek of the Halloween costumes that earned her and boyfriend Tristan a ‘best couples costume’ prize. Khloé was dressed as the mother of dragons Khaleesi, and Tristan as a shirtless (and very spot on) Drogo.

Aside from the couple looking uh-mazing last night, what really got fans talking was a photo that Khloé shared on her Snapchat. Take a good look at the caption…

That’s enough confirmation for us!

Last month E! News made the news official-ish saying an insider told them Khloé and her NBA star boyfriend, Tristan Thompson, were expecting. Adding that she “is so happy, you have no idea.” The news came around the same time People said sources confirmed Khloé was expecting a baby boy.

Now, the news channels are saying that Khloe is expecting a boy and we’re way more excited than we should be.

The TMZ sources also speculated that she conceived naturally (honestly, how do ‘they’ know this?!).

The news comes after Kylie Jenner’s baby news and her sister Kim Kardashian-West’s surrogate news. Are you thinking what we’re thinking? It’s going to be a crazy 2018 for the Kardashian household.
