Tyra Banks just took on the fashion industry: “My skin is not a trend”

Tyra Banks

Another year brings another cycle of America’s Next Top Model, one of the few constants left in this world. Tyra Banks swung by the AOL Build Series stage on Tuesday to hold a Q&A before her return to the show, and one audience member posed the question: Does Tyra think the fashion industry is liberal, and if so, why has it been such a long, slow slog to see more inclusive beauty standards, and less racially insensitive ad campaigns? In response, Tyra laid out one of the biggest problems in the fashion world.

Tyra starts her answer by point-blank saying no, the fashion industry isn’t liberal. While the people within it may be liberal-leaning, she says the industry as a whole doesn’t merit the label, and there are some people who use their power to preserve the industry’s flawed state. For years, the fashion industry had dictated which ethnicity’s “look” is trendy each season — and that mindset prevents lasting change, and keeps models from gaining the respect and recognition that they deserve.

ANTM has always made a point of showcasing diverse women, and the show’s new season has the most diverse cast in its history. But from Tyra’ years in the industry, the show is an outlier, and long-term progress is yet to come. “[The industry] is liberal and cyclical, and trends,” Tyra says. “Oh, it’s a black girl season! Oh, it’s a Brazilian season! OK, now where are they? Oh, it’s the Russians! Oh, now it’s the Asian girls!” Tyra continued: “To me, race is not a trend. My skin is not a trend, your skin is not a trend. We are who we are, so we should not go in and out of fashion. My booty, her booty, should not go in and out of fashion, that should just be.”

It comes down to objectification, she says. “The trend should be what we put on our bodies, not our bodies. And so that’s the part of fashion that I don’t like, is they’ll say, oh, the chocolate girls with the short hair is in for two years. And now, where’s that girl? She’s trying to figure out how she’s going to pay her bills, because she’s no longer hot, and cannot pay to get hired. And that’s what hurts me.”

You’ve got to see Gal Gadot’s impression of Kendall Jenner

Gal Gadot stole our hearts when she donned armour and fist cuffs as Wonder Woman earlier in the year. But now, well, it’s just got even better. (Soz, Kendall).

The 32-year-old parodied the supermodel on Saturday Night Live in a skit reality TV show called Kendall’s Model House.

In the teaser clip, Kendall, Gigi and Bella Hadid (all played by Gal) are all seen gathered in the kitchen as a narrator tells us to “Tune in as Kendall Jenner and supermodel sisters Bella and Gigi Hadid complain around a huge bowl of fruit.”

Donning a monotone voice and emotionless facial expression, ‘Kendall’ says to Gigi: “I’m under a lot of pressure, you’re prettier than me.”

“No way! You’re so much prettier than me,” Gigi replies.

Ok, we cannot help but laugh. Nice job, Gal. And we’re sure the girls will take it all in good humour. Right, right?!

Kendall Jenner predicted her modeling career when she was 14 — and this letter is proof

Kendall Jenner

On Friday’s episode of The Tonight Show, Jimmy Fallon asked Kendall Jenner to read a letter she wrote to her future self when she was 14. Aside from being hilarious, it actually contains some accurate predictions.

“Dear me, I am on my freshmen retreat right now and it is really boring,” she wrote. “But I met new people, so I guess that’s good. I am modeling right now and I love it. I am also on a show called Keeping Up With the Kardashians and we are filming season 5. Soon, we will be filming season 6. My goal in life is to become a big-time model and travel to really amazing places. I really hope it happens… I’m 14 years old. Just thought I would say that lol. And I’m really excited to read this in the future.”

Given that she just won Daily Front Row’s Fashion Icon of the Decade award and has appeared on 13 Vogue covers, we’d say her dream came true.

But that wasn’t even the most adorable part of the show. She also competed with James Franco in a “Pup Quiz,” where she answered trivia questions with puppies in her lap.

We can’t wait to try Behati Prinsloo’s beauty hack!

Behati PrinslooBehati Prinsloo rubs an ice cube across her face every morning. The 28-year-old model has revealed she will often run a small block of frozen water under her eyes to “de-puff” her face when she wakes up.

Speaking about her beauty hacks, the catwalk icon said: “I’ll take an ice cube in the morning when I wake up and just run it across my face, and it really wakes you up and it makes your skin feels better, and it de-puffs.

“My mom always ingrained sunblock into my routine as a child because I grew up in Africa, and the sun is so intense there. That’s not a secret, but it’s something that I think if I haven’t used all through my youth, I would’ve seen the effects by now.”

And Behati – who is the face of skincare company SK-II – has revealed her husband Adam Levine often steals her moisturiser or face masks, although she will happily wear his deodorant if she cannot find her own.

The fashion muse explained: “When I can’t find my deodorant, I usually use his, and then smell like a guy the whole day. He will always steal my moisturiser because he’s such a dude – he never has his own. So he’ll just take my moisturiser, or if I have a mask on and he thinks it’s funny, he’ll ask me to put it on him, too.”

And Behati, who has 10-month-old daughter dusty with the Maroon 5 band member, has revealed she is still coming to terms with motherhood but is enjoying the journey. She explained: “I’ve been gone for a while getting used to being a mother. It has been an amazing journey so far.”
